Hello everyone... Although I don't usually write to much... I thought I'd post this little piece for your enjoyment:-) It's from Oracle's point of view, and, as always, I don't own any of the characters in the story... Let me know what you think of it! This story uses the poem “On Looking Up By Chance At The Constellations” by Robert Frost (which pretty much speaks for itself, but I thought the story might make it seem more applicable:-) Hope you all enjoyed this... I think I'm moving closer to using an actual plot... Ooooo:-) Please let me know what you think... The complete poem is printed after the story. (A.j.) *** Peace and Quiet by Aea (CrimsonOracle@yahoo.com) *** Peace and quiet. Although it's never really quiet, and I, of all people, know that peace is never really there either, I just can't seem to get the term out of my vocabulary. Maybe it's just out of habit, but I prefer to think that my subconscious is silently yearning for the world to have both. Probably just habit. I have a lot of those. Like sitting at a computer for hours on end waiting for one or another of the world's heroes to need help with something that they can't figure out. Just a habit.... *** ~You'll wait a long, long time for anything much To happen in heaven beyond the floats of clouds. ~ *** Whenever I get a call, I feel the rush. It's a powerful feeling, to know my abilities can prevent worldwide disaster where no one else can. Granted, there have been some pretty close calls, but that's what makes it all the more worth while. *** ~And the Northern Lights that run like tingling nerves The sun and moon get crossed, but they never touch.~ *** Sometimes it amazes me that people all over the world can still have "peaceful" lives. They don't worry; they don't fear what's waiting for them tomorrow. They are unaware of the battle that goes on around them, simply because they do not care to see it. I guess ignorance really is bliss. *** ~Nor strike out fire from each other, nor crash out loud. The planets seem to interfere in their curves.~ *** But, really isn't that why I'm here? To give other people a real chance to live and be happy? No matter what happens, we always go on. And that's important. Victory or no, in spite of our losses, we keep fighting. Sometimes it seems that we get nowhere, and for step forward we go back two, but it only takes the one time you succeed at the seemingly impossible to make up for everything. Usually. In one way or another, we continue, and, if nothing else, manage to break even in our crusade. *** ~But nothing ever happens, no harm is done. We may as well go patiently on with life.~ *** Anyway, back to what I was saying about peace and quiet... I guess some people refuse to give themselves either one. Which, in turn is greatly why I've made a habit of sitting in front of the computer. Any number of people who give up their lives to help the world can come to me for their help. Ironically, while they have no thoughts for peace for themselves, they seem to have it as the ultimate goal. Without their efforts, no one could begin to think of peace or quiet. *** ~And look elsewhere than to the stars and moon and sun For the shocks and changes we need to keep us sane~ *** It would be stupid of me to think that our triumphs will last forever, or that our influences are immortal. I know that sometime, somewhere, we will be forgotten, hopefully there will be others to take our places. To accomplish our goals efficiently, we must assume that the worst options are always present. The world, by default, is in chaos, and we work against that. Accordingly, the same goes for our enemies. They will not have power forever. There may be others, there may not. But eventually, none of this will be thought of again. *** ~It is true the longest drought will end in rain The longest peace in China will end in strife.~ *** But that won't stop me from hoping their can be peace for now. All night I've been at my computer, 'keeping the peace'. Hehe... that was a joke. Sort of. *Yawn* Maybe I'll just call it a night here. After all, all the heroes out there can stand to learn to get along without their virtual 'answer key' for a few hours, right? Maybe I deserve a little peace now too....I know the world is in good hands. *** ~Still, it wouldn't reward the watcher to stay awake In hopes of seeing the calm of heaven break On his particular time and personal sight~ *** As I turn off my monitor and head for my bed, I notice that a dark haired, blue eyed, black and blue spandex clad vigilante is standig in my living room. He's got that wonderfully sweet smile on his face, that I know he only gets when he's watching me and thinks I don't know. As if he could that one by the all seeing oracle... I meet him in the living room, as he bends down, kissing me deeply. Wow... After a few minutes, well, closer to fifteen, we break apart, breathing heavily. For only a second, our eyes meet, and in one movement, he picks me up and moves to my bedroom...Who needs peace and quiet anyway... *** ~That calm seems certainly safe to last tonight~ The End By the way, as mentioned in the beginning, this fic used the poem 'On Looking Up By Chance At The Constellations' which is by Robert Frost (my all-time fav poet). Here it is altogether if you're interested: You'll wait a long, long time for anything much To happen in heaven beyond the floats of clouds. And the Northern Lights that run like tingling nerves The sun and moon get crossed, but they never touch. Nor strike out fire from each other, nor crash out loud. The planets seem to interfere in their curves But nothing ever happens, no harm is done. We may as well go patiently on with life And look elsewhere than to the stars and moon and sun For the shocks and changes we need to keep us sane It is true the longest drought will end in rain The longest peace in China will end in strife Still, it wouldn't reward the watcher to stay awake In hopes of seeing the calm of heaven break On his particular time and personal sight That calm seems certainly safe to last tonight.
