Spending The Day Together By Recceanna Valourawynne (reccea@hotmail.com) *** “What are you reading?” Bruce glanced up at Dinah, to see her staring at his papers inquiringly. He glanced to her own reading material, his face betraying nothing. “What are you reading?” She held her magazine up broadly. “PC World.” “A computer magazine?” His right eyebrow arched sharply. “Yeah,” she shrugged, settling back into her large chair, her feet draped off of one armrest while she leaned against the other one. “Babs wanted me to learn about some new program.” “What program?” He set his papers down; his eyes captivated by the way her hair curved against her chin. “Oh it’s no big deal,” she waved her hand about. “Just some doohickey that changes everything over to another code.” “You don’t know what it does, do you?” The corner of his mouth curved up in a smile. “The article’s boring.” She admitted. “But hey, at least she’s not making me read ‘computers for dummies’ or something.” “Well Barbara knows you’re smart,” Bruce offered, turning in his chair to get a better view of her socked feet. “I can help you with it.” “No.” she sat straight up and looked at him sternly. “I’m smart enough to understand this. I’ll learn it on my own. I’m just…. not in the mood right now. I want to know what you’re reading.” “A little research I had done on a new technology that’ll be introduced into the market in a few months.” He answered. “Why?” “So I can drop a hint to Lucius, get him looking into it.” Bruce sipped his water. “Ah,” she nodded understanding. They sat in silence for a few minutes, not taking their eyes off each other. “Do you want to do something?” “Like what?” His mind wandered to several options. “Take a walk.” That wasn’t one of them. “Where, on the grounds?” He ran his fingers across his hair; subconsciously making sure it was in order. “Yeah,” she smiled and pulled her legs in. She stood up and stretched, her shirt lifting up so that he could see her belly button. “Sounds nice.” His voice went gruff and he was next to her before she finished her stretch. His fingers traced the contours if her stomach lightly. She smiled at him, her eyes sparkling. Her hand found his, fingers entwining. She tugged him to the door. He pulled her coat out from the closet and wrapped her securely in it. He pulled his own on quickly, anxious to hold her hand again. His thumb rubbing the lifeline on her palm, they made their way outside. She tugged him along the path of brightly colored leaves, past the small rocks and larger boulders. In contented silence they made their way to the cliff side. The wind brushed up against them and she tucked herself into his side. Letting him take the brunt of the cold air. “I think I like outside the house better than inside.” She told him, her other hand fingering the button on his coat sleeve. “But Alfred’s on the inside.” He countered playfully. “Good point.” She tilted her head to the side. “Very good point.” “Alfred likes you quite a bit, you know.” He squeezed her hand. “I like him too.” She replied. “I know.” Bruce grinned. “Everyone likes Alfred.” She nodded, smirking. “You though…not everybody likes you.” “I’m an acquired taste.” “I’ve acquired it.” “I know.” The kiss was soft, nothing rushed, nothing wasted. His free hand fingered a strand of her hair. “This was a good idea.” He whispered, his mouth only a little above hers. “I have plenty of good ideas.” She breathed into his mouth. He kissed her nose and they pulled slowly apart from each other. One pair of hands still clasped. “We should probably head back,” his eyes drifted the sun sinking low on the horizon. “I know, Alfred will be wondering.” She answered, brushing her hair back behind her ears. “We should do this more often.” “Go for a walk?” He asked, as he led the way back to the house. “Spend the day together.” She answered.
